About National Service Scheme(NSS)
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It provides opportunity to the student youth of 11th& 12th Class of schools at + 2 Board level and student youth of Technical Institution, Graduate at colleges and University level of India to take part in various government led community service. Since activities & programmes. The sole aim of the NSS is to provide hands on experience to young students in delivering community service. Since inception of the NSS in the year 1969 , the number of students strength increased from 40,000 to over 3.8 million up to the end of the March 2018 in various universities, colleges and Institutions of higher learning have volunteered to take part in various community service programmes.
The NSS Badge Proud to Serve the Nation:
The N.S.S. Symbol is embossed on N.S.S. badge. All the youth volunteers who opt to serve the nation through the NSS led community service wear the NSS badge with pride and a sense of responsibility helping needy. There are 24 wheels in ‘Rath’ of Sun Temple Konark. Each wheel has eight bars, which represents 8 pahars of day. Hence the badge reminds the wearer to be in readiness for service of the nation round the clock. i.e. for 24 hours. The red colour in the NSS volunteers are full of blood i.e. lively, active ad spirited. The navy blue colour indicates the cosmos of which NSS is a tiny part ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.
Motto :
The motto of the National Service Scheme is NOT ME BUT YOU. This express the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service and appreciation of the other man’s point of view and also to show consideration for fellow human beings.
Benefits of Being a NSS Volunteer :
A NSS volunteer who takes part in the community service programme would either be a college level. Being an active member these student volunteers would have the exposure and experience to be the following
- an accomplished social leader
- an efficient administrator
- a person who understands human nature
The NSS is an extension program of RTM Nagpur University. The NSS was started in 1992. The first NSS Program Officer was Prof. Kunda Daware. After her Dr. L. N. Gaikwad took over the charge. He served this unit up to May 2007. Thereafter, he handed over the charge to Dr. Milind Gulhane, Senior Professor of Commerce Faculty till 2010. After him in year 2010, Dr. Dipak Pawar, Head of the Department of Sociology, took over the charge of NSS. In the year 2018, Dr. D. D. Bhave was appointed as the programme Officer. After her, in year 2021, Dr. Sanjay J. Singanjude took over the charge of NSS Programme Officer and he continues to be working with the students.
The NSS has basically two types of activities viz.
(i) Regular Activities
(ii) Special Camp
In the category of Regular activities works done by the NSS volunteers throughout the year
(a) Campus cleanliness drive.
(b) Tree plantation
(c) AIDS Awareness program.
(d) Collecting NirmalyaSangrah during GanpatiVisharjan.
(e) Rally on various themes.
(f) Visit to social work Centers.
(h) Rehabilitation work.
For Special Camp, a village is selected for the camp. 75 students of NSS are taken to village. The Camp is helped by the village Sarpanch. Village camp is planned in advance. The NSS voiunteersare divided in many groups. The tasks that the NSS volunteers take during the village camp are :
(a) Cleanliness drive.
(b) Interaction sessions with villagers.
(c) Street play, on Superstition, Alcoholism, etc.
(d) Free Medical camp for the villagers.
(e) Cultural programs
(f) Tree Plantation
NSS conducts the following programmes on HIV/AIDS, Blood donation and various other subjects of social importance, Street paly Blood donation camp, visit to Old Age Homes, Orphanages.
Apart from these programmes every year NSS unit visited adopted village. Gumthala on Bhandara Road 25 Kilometers away from college.During the visit the volunteers organizes various programmes for the villagers. They interact with the people, Discuss about their life in the village. Volunteers conduct awareness programmes for the villagers on various issues like Cleanliness, Hygiene, Need of education, Drug abuse. All kinds of discrimination prevailing in the society etc. The volunteers get very good support from the villagers and the Sarpanch all the time.
Incentive Marks Given:
Participation in Regular NSS – Program (Minimum 120 hours in 2 Years) [3 Marks]
Participation in NSS special Camp at college level – [3 Marks]
Participation in University or State/ National level camp. [4 Marks]
